How it works

Innovation comprises two key elements that yield a number of benefits
  • Ballot papers are simple, unencrypted text files. They are stored separately from the voter’s profile. No one can link the ballot paper to the voter’s profile, except the voter themselves. The secrecy of the vote is fully preserved.
  • Ballot papers contain two hash keys, making their content tamper-proof.

The steps

Registration

  • Receive a registration letter or email
  • Fill in the registration form with your preferred email address or mobile number for voting
  • Receive a verification link
  • Receive your voting password
  • In under 2 minutes

The vote

  • On the day: receipt of the voting email
  • Submission of the login form
  • Submission of the vote
  • Generation of the hash key on the Voter’s computer
  • on the server:
    on the one hand, the Voter’s profile is updated (“has voted”)
    on the other hand, the ballot paper is created, named after the hash key

Verification

  • Only the voter – and the voter alone – can check the contents of their ballot paper. Even after the votes have been counted!

Amendment

  • Thanks to the technology used, the voter – and the voter alone – may, if necessary, amend their ballot paper and/or cast a ‘spoof vote’ to protect themselves against coercion

Publication of results

  • Once the votes have been counted, the results are published
  • Ballot papers remain accessible for individual or collective verification (all ballot papers are accessible and verifiable by all stakeholders)

About us

e-vote.online was born out of two observations

Technological advances are making the use of online applications the norm. Sectors such as banking, healthcare, public administration, identity verification and e-commerce now offer the ability to ensure that online processes are secure.

Democracy is under attack from all sides: from our leaders, the media, opposition parties, and on social media… Yet democracy will collapse for good if it is unable to rebuild trust.

e-vote.online is our initiative to provide all groups and individuals with access to free and unassailable elections, whether for a city-wide referendum or a high-stakes election in a country at risk of sliding into authoritarianism.

The Founder

A developer and entrepreneur for over 25 years, Christophe Dutordoir has spent his career designing and operating reliable digital platforms for public institutions, international organisations and high-impact projects.

With e-vote.online, of which he is the founder and inventor, he is pursuing a personal conviction: that technology can — and must — strengthen democracy rather than weaken it.

His work aims to make voting more transparent, secure and accessible, including in contexts where trust in electoral processes is being tested.
